A SURVEY OF SHEEP MASTITIS IN SOUTHERN BRAZIL Ciência Rural
Vaz,Adil Knackfuss; Jones,James Eirug Thomas.
SUMMARY Ovine mastitis causes varying economic fosses in all countries where sheep are kept. A survey of 3128 breeding ewes in 22 farms in two areas with different management practices in Southern Brazil showed that the average prevalence of subclinical and chronic mastitis was 14.1% of ewes with at least one affected gland. From those, 4.49% were also bacteriologically positive. The prevalence in individual farms varied from 0 to 37% of ewes with clinical abnormalities of the udder. The overall prevalence was greater in Area II, where meat breeds predominate and animals are housed at night. It is concluded that subclinical and chronic mastitis is uniikely to be an economic problem in Area I, where wool production is the objective of the sheep industry....

Silveira,José Coriolano Andrade da; Fonsêca,Vinícius de França Carvalho; Furtado,Dermeval Araújo; Santos,Severino Guilherme Caetano Gonçalves dos; Silva,Josinaldo Araújo da; Pimenta Filho,Edgard Cavalcanti; Saraiva,Edilson Paes; Medeiros,Ariosvaldo Nunes de.
ABSTRACT This study was designed to assess the effects of feeding space availability on social behavior and performance of housed crossbreed sheep through the use of three different types of feeders. Thirty-six crossbreed ewes (Santa Inês × Dorper; 2-3 years old) with initial body weight of 34.99±4.28 kg were randomly assigned to a 3 × 3 (feeder type × available space at the feeder) factorial arrangement among nine pens. Pens had one of three feeder types (concrete bunk, plastic, or wood barrel) and one of three amounts of available space in the feeder (0.33, 0.25, or 0.20 m animal−1). Total dry matter intake/pen, dry matter intake per animal, total weight gain/pen, daily weight gain/animal, and food waste were evaluated. Percentage of time spent at...

Effect of Bovine Somatotropin Administration on Day 11 after Artificial Insemination in Estrus-Induced Ewes during the Non-Breeding Season OAK
Fukui, Yutaka; Yamamura, Kunio; Matsunaga, Nobuyoshi; Miyamoto, Akio; 福井, 豊; 宮本, 明夫.
The present study aimed to examine the possibility that bovine somatotropin (BST) treatment after artificial insemination (AI) may improve the fertility by the stimulation of corpus luteum (CL) function in seasonally anestrous ewes. The experiment was conducted at the Tawa Field Station, Shibecha-cho in Hokkaido, Japan, during the non-breeding season (May, 1995). Eighty-nine mature (2 to 3 years old) Suffolk and Suffolk-crossed ewes were treated with controlled internal drug release devices containing 0.3 g progesterone (CIDR-G) for 12 days. Ewes were injected intramuscularly with 500 IU PMSG the day before CIDR removal. Eighty-seven ewes were assigned to an insemination of frozen semen on a fixed-time basis (42 to 50 h) after removal of CIDR. On the 11th...

Effects of physiological and management factors on the milk composition of rambouillet ewes Agrociencia
Ochoa-Cordero,Manuel A.; Torres-Hernández,Glafiro; Mandeville,Peter B.; Díaz-Gómez,Marta O..
Abstract The effects of physiological and management factors on the milk composition of Rambouillet ewes under confined management at the Sheep Unit, Agronomy Faculty, Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí, México, were evaluated. Two treatments were randomly assigned to 45 single and twin-rearing ewes, 2-5 years old: 6 and 8 weeks of lactation, which were the dates when the lambs were weaned. Milk samples were taken during lactation (weeks 1, 3, 6, 8, and 12), and chemically analyzed using standard laboratory procedures for protein, fat, total solids, ash and lactose percentages. Statistical analysis was performed utilizing a model that included the fixed effects of lambing number (LN: 1-3+), birth type (BT: single, twins), lamb sex (LS: ram lambs, ewe...

Energetic metabolism in fasting sheep: regularization of metabolic profile by treatment with oral glucose, with prior handling of gastric groove R. Bras. Zootec.
Martín-Alonso,María José; Escalera-Valente,Francisco; Cal-Pereyra,Luis G.; Benech,Alejandro; Alonso,María Pilar; González-Montaña,José Ramiro.
ABSTRACT The objective of this research was to evaluate a possible corrective measure against negative metabolic states, as occurs in the advanced stage of gestation in ewes, and that sometimes produces a disease called pregnancy toxaemia. In the present research, we found that the joint administration of i.v. lysine-vasopressin (0.08 IU/kg body weight, BW) and an oral glucose solution (50 g) produces an increase in blood glucose, which persists for some time (up to 6 h); therefore, it could be used in the treatment of pregnancy toxaemia. This therapy is based on the fact that lysine-vasopressin induces gastric groove closure in adult ruminants, enabling orally administered glucose to reach the abomasum directly, from where it rapidly passes into the...
